CINEMA AND TELEVISION

TYPES OF FILMS

Action film - A film with a fast-moving plot, usually containing scenes of violence.
Adventure film - A film with exciting stories, with new experiences or exotic locales.
Animated film - A film produced by photographing a series of gradually changing drawings which give the illusion of movement when the series is projected rapidly.
Comedy - A film that is intentionally funny either in its characters or its action.
Documentary film - A film that deals with real people and events.
Drama - Serious presentations or stories with settings or life situations that portray realistic characters in conflict with either themselves, others, or forces of nature.
Horror film - A film that is intended to frighten people, especially one about murders, frightening creatures, or evil people.
Musical - A film genre in which songs sung by the characters are interwoven into the narrative, sometimes accompanied by dancing.
Romance - Films about romantic relationships.
Science fiction film - Films about an imagined future, especially about space travel or other planets.
Thriller - A film that has an exciting story, often about solving a crime.
War film - A film in which a fictionalized or fact-based story is told about an actual historical war.

MOVIE

Cast - All of the actors in a movie
Role - The part an actor plays in a movie
Animation - When the actors and scenes in a movie are made by a drawing or computer
Soundtrack/ Score - The music in a movie
Plot - The main story of a movie
Special Effects - The parts of a movie digitally created by a computer
Review - An article containing a critic's opinion of a movie
Director - The person who makes all the decisions in how a movie looks and sounds
Actor/ Actress - A person who is in a movie
Script - The written text that contains the words and actions in a film
Sequel - A movie that comes second or third in a series of movies
Remake - A movie that has been filmed again and released.

TV GENRES

Sports - Programmes featuring sports or sporting events.
Sitcom - An amusing TV series about fictional characters.
Documentary - A TV programme that documents real life events.
Soap - A fictional drama about people’s daily lives.
Cartoon - A programme that features animated characters.
Travel or Holiday - A show that features popular holiday destinations or travel reviews.
Kids/Children’s - TV programmes produced for children.
Drama - A fictional TV story, featuring actors.
Makeover - A show that helps people change their image or lifestyle.
News - A show that reports world events as they unfold.
Cookery - A programme hosted by famous chefs, who teach people how to cook.
Reality TV - A “fly on the wall” show or talent show, featuring real people.
Talk Show or Chat Show - Programmes hosted by a TV personality, featuring guests who talk about their lives.
Shopping - Phone-in TV shows where people can either buy featured items or bid for them,
Game Show - A TV programme featuring competitive games or quizzes.
Music - A TV show featuring live or recorded music.
Gardening Show - A programme about gardening, often fronted by a well-known television personality.
Lifestyle - A TV show featuring topics such as fashion, diet, exercise, health and leisure pursuits.
DIY - TV programmes showing people how to do repairs to their houses. Also known as “Do It Yourself” programmes.
Charity - A “telethon” show which aims to raise funds for charity by persuading members of the public to phone in and donate money.
Animal or Wildlife - A programme about wild animals or pets.


VERBS & PHRASAL VERBS

To act - To perform in a film, play etc.
To perform - To entertain people by dancing, singing, acting or playing music.
To star - To be the main person in a film, play, etc
To understudy - To learn the part of another actor in a play.
Act out - To perform the actions and say the words of a story.
